An emergency is something that happens outside of our office hours and cannot wait safely for you to report during the next working day.
You should phone 999 if you need the police, ambulance, fire brigade or coastguard.
Examples of 999 emergencies are those where:
- a person is in immediate danger of injury or their life is at risk
- you suspect a crime is in progress
- a structure on fire
- another type of serious incident needs immediate emergency service attendance
Call 101 to report crimes that are not an emergency.
Call 111 if you need NHS medical help but it's not an emergency.
Our emergency support
We provide an emergency phone number for you to use outside of our office hours.
You should use this service only in the following situations.
| Type of emergency | Examples |

| Major emergency | Structural damage to properties or infrastructure. |
| Social services | Children, elderly or vulnerable people at risk of harm. |
| Care equipment | Faults affecting alarms or other assistive technology. |
| Caretaker services | Blockages in council housing blocks or reset fire panels. |
| Major highway hazard | Obstruction on a highway or serious damage to a lamppost. |
| Lost or found dogs | Missing dog, or dog to be collected by the local dog warden. |
| Death registration | For timely burials in line with religious or cultural practices. |
| Marriages and civil partnerships | For terminally ill residents only. |

For use outside of normal office hours:
- Monday to Thursday, 5pm to 9am
- Friday, from 5pm through the weekend until 9am on Monday
- public holidays
