Affordable housing schemes to transform run-down garages

10 October 2024

Proposals to turn underused garages into more than 40 affordable new homes at council-owned sites in South Ockendon, Stanford-le-Hope and Chadwell St Mary have been approved.

On Wednesday 9 October 2024, Thurrock Council’s Cabinet agreed plans to demolish 153 garages and develop 46 high-quality council homes across Broxburn Drive, Lyndhurst Road and Vigerons Way.

Construction contracts will soon be put out to tender to kickstart the developments, made up of 33 homes at Broxburn Drive, six at Lyndhurst Road and seven at Vigerons Way.

Cllr Lee Watson, Cabinet Member for Good Growth, said: “This is fantastic news which will bring forward much-needed council housing in the borough for our residents to benefit from. The developments will transform the underused garages that are frequently vandalised into modern, energy efficient homes that are heated using innovative air source heat pumps.

“All the schemes will comprise of 100 per cent affordable homes offering a mixture of one-bed, two-bed and three-bed flats including one wheelchair accessible flat at Broxburn Drive, two-bed and three-bed houses at Lyndhurst Road and two-bed houses at Vigerons Way.

“We are committed to unlocking a new generation of council housing that meets the requirements of modern living.”

Residents were invited to give their views on the potential development at Vigerons Way in early 2021, Broxburn Drive in late 2021 and Lyndhurst Road in February 2023. Planning permission was granted for the sites at planning committees in September and October 2023.
