New Thurrock fund created to help those in need this winter

26 September 2024

Thurrock Council is set to launch a new campaign to help make sure residents get the support they need to help them through this winter, including creating a £100,000 ‘pensioner winter support fund’ to help pensioners who are on benefits and will no longer receive the winter fuel allowance.

The council will also work with Thurrock Community and Voluntary Services and other community groups to make sure that support reaches those that need it.

Cllr John Kent, Leader of Thurrock Council, who introduced the Pensioner Winter Support Fund, said: "We have identified at least £100,000, from the government’s Household Support Fund to help the Thurrock pensioners most in need this winter. We are working to make sure there is a simple and effective process for residents to access help when they need it."

Cllr Sara Muldowney, Cabinet member for Resources, said: “We want to make sure that our residents, especially the borough’s most vulnerable pensioners and families, have access to the help and support they need to stay warm and well this autumn and winter.

“The council and our partners will be on hand to support residents this winter. As well as creating the pensioner winter support fund we will work with Thurrock’s fantastic voluntary and community groups and volunteers to make sure that everyone can keep warm, and get access to the help and support they need.

“We have a brilliant network of libraries, community hubs and our new Purfleet pantry, where people can find a warm space, food, advice and a friendly face, so please don’t be shy – come and see us and make sure you get the help you need.”

Thurrock Cares will launch soon and will include:

  • a new ‘pensioner winter support fund’ to help eligible pensioners with the cost of heating their homes
  • advice and help for residents to sign-up for the benefits they’re entitled to, especially Pension Credit which will allow our poorest pensioners to retain their winter fuel payments
  • an online tool to help residents find a range of advice and support
  • a booklet containing details of advice and support which will be available at Thurrock’s community hubs, libraries and other community centres
  • a series of roadshows, taking help and advice out the borough’s communities

More information about the campaign will be available on the council’s website when it officially launches.
