Thurrock Council’s Cabinet has approved a new Waste and Recycling Collection Policy at its meeting on 19 March 2025. The new Waste and Recycling Collection Policy will improve service reliability for residents, increase recycling rates and ensure the council meets its legislative requirements for collections and recycling.
The policy will reduce the environmental impact of waste through a new weekly food waste collection service, by increasing the recycling rate to 50% by 2030, and reducing landfill to zero.
The new policy aligns with the Environment Act 2021 and helps deliver Thurrock Council’s 2021-2031 Waste and Recycling Strategy.
Councillor Victoria Holloway, Cabinet Member for Place and the Environment said: “Our new waste policy commits us to deliver a service that’s better for residents and better for the environment.
“We have set ambitious targets of 50% recycling by 2030 and zero waste to landfill. To achieve this, we will all need to recycle more and to waste less. I am pleased that we’re introducing a new, weekly food collection service.
“We know how important it is for residents that we deliver a reliable waste collection service. With new measures, allowing residents to report and help reschedule missed collections, this policy will help deliver real improvements for the residents of Thurrock.”
