Use of CCTV
CCTV is a vital tool in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour in Thurrock. We use it to give residents a sense of security and reassurance so they feel safer within their neighbourhoods.
Our CCTV service has over 700 cameras in over 35 locations across the borough. The cameras cover high-rise and low-rise council housing estates, along with open public spaces.
We constantly review the location of our cameras and consider placements for areas that would otherwise not have CCTV coverage but may be of a particular concern.
Security for council tenants
In our council housing, CCTV is used to assist with fire safety and emergency situations, and to combat anti-social behaviour. We consult with tenants and residents before installing new CCTV. Cameras are located at each floor level and bin chute areas, as well as secure places like fire alarm panels and lift motor rooms.
Tackling crime
Our CCTV team works with Essex Police to identify people suspected of crime and anti-social behaviour. The team also works with Civil Enforcement Officers and are in regular contact to report incidents such as fly-tipping and street drinking.
Follow-up action is always taken when suspects of crime or anti-social behaviour are identified.
Our CCTV public identification policy sets out where, how, when and against whom we will use the media to help identify suspects who are not known or could not be identified by any other means.
