Conservation area status
Conservation areas need special care to make sure that their character is not damaged.
The first issue on any proposal for development in a conservation area is its effect on the whole area and whether it would serve to "protect or enhance" its character.
There are a number of measures meant to achieve this care. These are applied by us, but are set down in government laws and advice. They include:
- schemes for the preservation and improvement of conservation areas
- controls over the demolition of buildings
- controls about cutting down trees
- control of new developments
Preservation schemes for conservation areas
We must publish proposals for the preservation and improvement of conservation areas. When preparing schemes we ask the advice and views of local people and put these in the final scheme. We will continue to carry out studies and give funds to help improve Thurrock's conservation areas.
