Preventing serious violence
Councils and local services share information and take action to prevent and reduce serious violence.
The UK-wide Serious Violence Duty sets out how this must be done. Go to GOV.UK: Serious Violence Duty.
Within the duty, serious violence includes – but is not limited to – the following:
- homicide
- gun crime
- knife crime
- use of corrosive substances as a weapon
- gang criminality, including county lines drug dealing
- domestic abuse
- sexual offences
- violence against property
- threats of violence
Working in partnership
Southend, Essex and Thurrock (SET) local authorities and services work together through the Essex Violence and Vulnerability Partnership (VVP). This includes working closely to prevent violence and protect the vulnerable by:
- tackling organised crime gangs, county lines and drug supply
- taking strong local enforcement action
- reducing the risk of young or vulnerable people being exploited by gangs
- helping those involved in gangs to break away
For more useful information, including lesson plans and videos to help tackle knife harm, gangs and county lines, go to the Essex Violence and Vulnerability Unit website.
Partners within Thurrock have adopted the Essex VVP: Essex Serious Violence Strategy 2024-2025.
Local priorities for tackling violence and crime are set by Thurrock Community Safety Partnership.
