Thousands in Thurrock attend online safety event

Students and teachers from across Thurrock came together to learn about digital safety during the Walk Online Road Show.
The annual event took place at Civic Hall, Blackshots in Grays on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 November.
This year saw its largest turnout, with 2,600 Year Five students and 256 teachers and adults in attendance.

Thurrock Council to host community engagement session to raise awareness of Gender-Based Violence

As part of the UN Women 16 Days of Activism campaign against Gender-Based Violence, Thurrock Council will host two community engagement sessions on Thursday 28 November.
These sessions are aimed at building connections within the community, raising awareness of Violence Against Young Women and Girls (VAWG), and sharing important resources to enhance public safety and support.
Members of the council will be joined by partners from the VAWG board, who will provide information, answer questions, and offer resources to those attending.

Cabinet Member praises initiative to help Thurrock's vulnerable children celebrate Christmas

Cllr Vikki Hartstean, Cabinet Member for Children's Services and Education, has commended Impulse Leisure Centre for their inspiring efforts to ensure Thurrock’s vulnerable children receive a gift this Christmas.
Through their Give a Gift campaign, Impulse Leisure is collecting donations of toys and gifts at their leisure centre sites. These donations will bring festive cheer to vulnerable children across Thurrock and those at Little Havens Children's Hospice.

Innovative savings proposals will protect frontline services for residents

Proposed £18.2 million savings that will protect frontline services, ensure that our vulnerable residents are protected, and use innovation and technology to target services more effectively were scrutinised at Corporate Overview and Scrutiny this Wednesday (20 November) and will now go to Cabinet in December.
Savings proposals focus on protecting frontline services to residents by reducing management costs and making use of new technology and ways of working that more efficiently target help at those who need it.

Cabinet Member meets with community to discuss anti-social behaviour concerns

Earlier this week (Wednesday 20 November), Cllr Victoria Holloway, Cabinet Member for Place and Environment, met with residents and local businesses to hear about their ideas and concerns around tackling anti-social behaviour.
Cllr Holloway was joined by members from Thurrock Council's Housing, Environment and Community Safety Teams, as well as members of Essex Police on a walkabout in Belhus, South Ockendon.

Access help and support as the first Thurrock Cares Roadshow comes to Aveley

Thurrock Council, in collaboration with Thurrock CVS and the Stronger Together Thurrock partnership, is hosting the free drop-in event at Aveley Community Hub in Aveley, South Ockendon, from 10am to 1pm.

Shop owner prosecuted for selling vape to 15-year-old

The owner of a Tilbury vape shop has been ordered to pay more than £1,400 after a vape was sold to an underage customer, as part of an operation by Thurrock Council’s Trading Standards.
On Tuesday 12 November 2024, Basildon Magistrates Court ordered Alaur Rahman, 37, of Thames Road, Grays, who owns Vape-E-Licious in St Chads Road to pay £473 in fines and £1,000 in costs. Mr Rahman pled guilty to the charge of selling an age restricted product to an underage person under the Children and Families Act 2014.

Thurrock Council files claim against 23 councils, to recover approximately £40m lost through investments assured by industry body APSE

Thurrock Council has today (Friday 15 November 2024) filed a claim against 23 councils that are members of the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE), after a ‘standstill’ agreement was not reached between Thurrock and the other councils. The council will be moving immediately to secure an order to stay those proceedings to minimise costs for all involved and to allow the council to focus on other recovery options.

Community forum breathes new life into forgotten park space

An unused, overlooked space in Blackthorn Park, Stifford Clays, has been transformed into a thriving memorial garden.
Stifford Clays Residents Community Forum approached Thurrock Council about the fenced off and forgotten area in the park with ambitious plans to restore it as a memorial garden in time for Remembrance Sunday. The council agreed the forum could take on the land as a community project.

Large electrical transformer to travel through Thurrock

15 November 2024
There will be potential road disruptions through West Thurrock on Saturday 16 November, starting at 6pm due to the transportation of a large electrical transformer.
The transformer, weighing 155 tonnes and measuring nearly 70m in length, is being transported from the Port of Tilbury to a new National Grid substation in Woking. This is the first of five planned journeys over the next six months.
Due to weight restrictions at Junction 30 of the M25, the transporter will use a route through West Thurrock.
