Overview
We are responsible for 576km of roads, along with their footways, gullies, safety barriers, pedestrian guardrails, traffic signs, street nameplates, road markings and road studs.
We investigate reported potholes and manage traffic flow in the borough to improve safety.
We also co-ordinate roadworks by utility companies, administer construction of dropped kerb vehicle crossovers, and are the highway authority for abnormal loads.
Weather conditions are monitored continually during the winter months. When necessary, gritting and snow clearing takes place on just under 300km of the road network.
The government's Department for Transport (DfT) provided further 2023/24 funding of £314,000 for us carry out works in addition to those listed in our capital programme. This funding was spent as follows. Details as at July 2024.

Regular checks
All roads and footways are routinely inspected at set frequencies depending on the importance and usage of the route. There are 3 priority levels for the repair of defects, ranging between 72 hours and 3 months depending upon the nature and severity of the defect.
We also carry out an annual road condition assessment to prioritise major maintenance schemes.
