Finding somewhere to live

Applying for council housing

For most households the chances of being offered a property by us are extremely low, and you should think about other housing options.

You should read our information before you apply for council housing.

Go to our online council housing services to apply for council housing.

You will need your National Insurance number and other details about you and everyone in your household.

You will be asked lots of questions and it is important that you answer them honestly.

Housing qualification test

The application has a qualification test. If you don't pass this test you won't qualify for council housing.

Once you have applied, we must check your application before you can bid for a council property.

Evidence

You will need to provide the evidence we request to support information you have given us about yourself and your household. This will include proof that you had been living in Thurrock for at least 6 years before you joined the housing waiting list. This information is needed when you register and when you are shortlisted for a property.

Go to documents that prove you qualify.

We will write to let you know when your application has been accepted and what homes you can bid for. We will also tell you which housing priority band you have been placed in.

Appeals

You can use the form below to appeal against the decision made about your housing application. We may contact you if we need more information. Usually we will let you know the outcome within 28 days, but complex cases may take longer.
